What is the Needle Syringe Program(NSP)?
It is a public health initiative aiming to minimise the spread of blood-borne viruses such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and hepatitis B and C among people who inject drugs and into the wider community. What is the Purpose of NSP? The sharing of used needles and other injecting equipment is the most common form of transmission of blood-borne viruses. In Australia NSPs are preventing cases of infection among people injecting, and also protecting the wider environment. This is achieved by having sites available to provide a safe program to allow for non-sharing of needles and also a safe disposal site for these items If you would like further information please visit the Health Victoria website. |
